Does IV fluid therapy treat sepsis?

Sepsis is a serious response to an infection that can disturb blood flow and affect organ function. IV fluids may help support circulation, improve delivery of blood to tissues and replace losses when a person is unwell. Clinicians also look for the infection source, check vital signs and organ function, and may use antimicrobial treatment or other support. The exact plan depends on the person's examination and test results.

Treat suspected sepsis as an emergency rather than trying to manage it with a drip arranged outside medical care. Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for rapid assessment. Tell clinicians about recent infections, wounds, procedures, medicines, allergies and changes in alertness. Do not delay seeking help while waiting for a fever or other single symptom to appear.

Seek emergency help for new confusion, difficulty breathing, fainting, very cold or clammy skin, severe weakness, blue or mottled skin, or markedly reduced urine. Also act urgently when an infection is accompanied by rapid deterioration or a person seems much more unwell than expected. Sepsis can progress quickly, so early assessment matters.

Ask where the infection may be, what the IV fluid is intended to correct, which treatments are being considered, and how breathing, blood pressure and urine output will be monitored.
