Does IV fluid therapy treat heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a medical emergency in which the body becomes dangerously hot and the brain or other organs may be affected. Confusion, unusual behaviour, collapse, seizure or loss of consciousness are especially concerning. Hospital teams may give IV fluids to support circulation and correct fluid loss, while rapidly cooling the body and checking organ function. The drip is one part of treatment, not a reason to delay cooling or transport.

Call emergency services immediately. Move the person out of the heat, remove unnecessary clothing, and cool them with wet cloths, a fan, or cool water. Do not force drinks into someone who is confused, drowsy or unable to swallow. Stay with the person, monitor breathing, and follow the emergency operator's instructions.

Do not wait for symptoms to settle if there is confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, abnormal behaviour or reduced alertness after heat exposure. These signs require emergency assessment even if sweating is present. A person who has improved after cooling may still need medical evaluation because heat injury can affect the body after the skin feels cooler.

After urgent treatment, ask what caused the episode, how recovery will be monitored, when activity is safe, and how to prevent another heat-related illness.
