Does IV fluid therapy treat heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion develops when the body loses water and salts through sweating and cannot cool itself effectively. Symptoms can include heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness and muscle cramps. A drip may restore fluid when the person is too nauseated to drink, remains dehydrated, or needs observation. IV fluid therapy does not remove the heat source; moving to a cool place and reducing body temperature remain central to recovery.

Move the person into shade or air conditioning, loosen extra clothing, and cool the skin with cool wet cloths or a fan. If fully alert and able to swallow, offer small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Stop exertion and stay with them while symptoms improve. Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, trouble breathing, or skin that is very hot with a changed mental state.
