Does IV fluid therapy treat gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis irritates the stomach and intestines and may cause loose stools, vomiting, cramps, nausea or fever. The main concern is loss of fluid and salts. A drip places fluid directly into a vein, so it can help restore circulation and hydration when oral fluids are not staying down. It does not act as an antiviral or antibacterial cure, and it does not replace assessment of the underlying cause.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. If vomiting follows a large drink, pause briefly and try smaller amounts. Once tolerated, choose light foods and avoid alcohol. A clinician may recommend IV fluid therapy after checking your symptoms, hydration, pulse, blood pressure and ability to drink. Do not arrange a drip as a substitute for medical review when symptoms are severe.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt advice for a young child, an older adult, pregnancy, or a long-term condition because dehydration can develop more quickly. Emergency assessment is needed if the person becomes difficult to wake or has trouble breathing.
