Does IV fluid therapy treat food poisoning?

Food poisoning commonly causes vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever. These losses can reduce water and salts, leaving you dizzy, weak, thirsty, or urinating less. IV fluids replace fluid through a vein when you cannot drink enough or cannot keep drinks down. They support recovery while the cause runs its course or receives specific treatment when a clinician considers that appropriate; they do not make every foodborne illness resolve immediately.

Take frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration solution if you are awake, can swallow, and are not repeatedly vomiting. Eat light foods when tolerated and avoid alcohol until you recover. Keep notes on fluid intake, urine, vomiting, diarrhoea, pain, and fever. Do not use leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without advice, because the right choice depends on the suspected cause and your symptoms.

Get urgent help for blood in stool or vomit, severe or localised abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for very little urine, marked weakness, high fever, worsening symptoms, or illness after eating a high-risk food. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with serious medical conditions need a lower threshold for care.
