Does IV fluid therapy treat dehydration?

Dehydration happens when fluid losses exceed intake, such as after vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, sweating, or poor access to drinks. Mild cases may improve with frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. IV fluids are considered when dehydration is more serious, the person cannot swallow or keep fluids down, or circulation needs prompt support. Clinicians choose the fluid and amount according to symptoms, examination, and conditions affecting the heart or kidneys.

If you are alert and able to drink, take small, regular sips and pause briefly if nausea worsens. Oral rehydration solution can replace salts as well as water after significant fluid loss. Record vomiting, diarrhoea, urine output, dizziness, and the time symptoms began. Do not try to arrange IV treatment without evaluation; correcting the wrong fluid balance can cause problems.

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little urine, fast or difficult breathing, or cold clammy skin. Get prompt medical advice for dehydration in a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with heart, kidney, or other serious illness.

Ask how severe the dehydration is, whether oral rehydration is enough, and what caused the fluid loss. Ask how to monitor urine and symptoms at home, which drinks to use, and what changes mean you need urgent reassessment.
