Does IV fluid therapy treat cholera?

Cholera can cause sudden, profuse watery diarrhoea, with rapid loss of water and salts. IV fluids deliver replacement directly into a vein when dehydration is severe or drinking is not possible. A medical team may also use oral rehydration when safe and consider treatment directed at the infection. Because losses can continue, the amount and type of fluid need repeated clinical assessment rather than home estimation.

Treat suspected cholera as an urgent medical problem, especially after watery diarrhoea with vomiting, thirst, weakness, dizziness, or reduced urination. Start small sips of oral rehydration solution if the person is awake and can swallow, while arranging care. Avoid delaying evaluation to try home remedies. Wash hands carefully and use safe water because contaminated stool or vomit can spread infection.

Seek emergency care immediately for confusion, fainting, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little urine, cold or clammy skin, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening diarrhoea. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a chronic illness can become dangerously dehydrated quickly and should be assessed without delay.
