Does IUI treat female infertility?

Intrauterine insemination places prepared sperm inside the uterus around the time an egg is released. This shortens the distance sperm must travel and can be timed with natural or medically supported ovulation. It does not open blocked fallopian tubes, remove significant endometriosis, or correct problems involving egg quality or the uterine cavity. At least one usable fallopian tube and a reasonable opportunity for ovulation are usually needed for IUI to make sense.

Female infertility can have several contributing factors, including irregular ovulation, endometriosis, tubal changes, or findings that remain unexplained after assessment. The likely benefit of IUI therefore depends on the specific pattern rather than the label alone.

A fertility clinician may review menstrual patterns, ovulation tests, ovarian reserve markers, pelvic imaging, and a test of the fallopian tubes. A semen analysis is also relevant because treatment decisions involve both partners. If IUI is appropriate, the clinic explains whether to use a natural cycle or medicines to support egg release, how ovulation will be monitored, and when insemination will occur. Keep a record of cycle dates, medicines, prior pregnancies, operations, and known pelvic conditions for the appointment.

Arrange a fertility assessment if pregnancy has not occurred despite regular attempts, or sooner when periods are very irregular, there is a history of pelvic infection or surgery, severe period pain, or a known fertility concern. Seek prompt medical care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with one-sided pain. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether IUI is being considered.

Ask which factor is most affecting conception, whether both tubes appear usable, how ovulation will be confirmed, and what would make another treatment more suitable. Clarify the monitoring plan, medicine side effects, the number of attempts you would review together, and when to reconsider the approach.
