Does isotretinoin treatment help with blackheads?

Blackheads form when oil and dead skin cells block a pore and the material darkens at the surface. Isotretinoin acts throughout the skin to reduce activity of oil glands and limit the conditions that keep pores blocked. This can make new blackheads less likely and may improve acne that has not responded adequately to other treatments.

Treatment is taken by mouth and is prescribed for selected patients after a clinician reviews the acne pattern, medical history, medicines, and pregnancy potential. Dry lips, dry skin, irritation, and sensitivity can occur. Blackheads may not clear immediately, and the response varies between people.

Take isotretinoin only as prescribed and attend the follow-up appointments requested by your dermatologist. Use a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, lip balm, and daily sun protection. Avoid squeezing blackheads and avoid harsh scrubs or waxing while the skin is more fragile. Tell the prescriber about every medicine and supplement you use, including vitamin products.

Isotretinoin must not be used during pregnancy because it can seriously harm an unborn baby. Follow the pregnancy-prevention and testing instructions given by your care team, and report a possible pregnancy promptly.

Contact your dermatologist if severe headache, vision changes, marked mood changes, intense abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a severe rash develops. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering reaction. Persistent blackheads may need a treatment review rather than extra capsules or more frequent dosing.
