Does steroid injection into the skin treat granuloma annulare?

Granuloma annulare can produce firm, skin-coloured or reddish bumps arranged in rings or arcs. It is not the same as a bacterial infection, and the appearance can overlap with other rashes. A clinician may use a skin examination and, when needed, further assessment before choosing treatment.

A steroid injection places anti-inflammatory medicine into a limited area, so it may be considered when lesions are few, thick, or bothersome. It may be less practical when the rash covers a broad area. Local thinning, a small depression, or lightening or darkening of the skin can occur at the injection site.

Arrange an assessment if ring-shaped bumps are new, spreading, itchy, painful, or not settling. Photographing changes can help show how the rash has evolved. Do not inject or apply strong steroid medicine without guidance, because this can alter the appearance and delay the correct diagnosis.

Discuss whether the goal is to improve a small group of lesions, relieve symptoms, or treat a wider eruption. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune conditions, medicines, and previous reactions to injections. Follow the agreed skin-care instructions after treatment.

Seek prompt review if the rash becomes painful, develops blisters, crusting, pus, open sores, or marked warmth, or if you feel unwell. These changes are not typical of every granuloma annulare lesion and may indicate infection, irritation, or another diagnosis requiring different care.
