Does steroid injection into the skin treat a skin cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin. When it becomes inflamed, it may swell, feel tender, and turn red. Steroid medicine placed into or around the inflamed area can dampen that reaction, but the sac and its lining can remain in place.

Because a red lump can also be an abscess, acne lesion, or another growth, examination matters before an injection. If the cyst is infected, drainage or other care may be more appropriate. Steroid placed into the skin can rarely cause thinning, a depression, or a change in colour at the injection site.

Have a clinician examine a new, changing, painful, or repeatedly inflamed lump. Avoid squeezing, piercing, or attempting to drain it at home; this can spread inflammation and make healing harder. Mention previous cysts, skin reactions, and medicines during the visit.

Ask whether the immediate aim is to settle inflammation or to remove the cyst. Excision of the sac may be considered when a cyst is persistent or recurrent, often after active inflammation has settled. Keep any treated area clean and follow the specific wound instructions you receive.

Get prompt medical care if the lump rapidly enlarges, becomes hot and very painful, releases foul-smelling fluid, or occurs with fever or feeling unwell. Seek review for a lump that bleeds, ulcerates, is fixed to deeper tissue, or does not behave like a familiar cyst.
