Can steroid injections treat scarring alopecia?

Scarring alopecia is a group of hair-loss conditions in which inflammation damages follicles and leaves scar tissue. Different forms affect different scalp regions and may cause itch, burning, tenderness, redness, scaling, pustules, or gradual loss of follicle openings.

An intralesional steroid is delivered into chosen inflamed areas to lower local inflammation. This may help when disease is active, but a smooth scarred patch without active inflammation needs a different conversation. The purpose is usually to protect remaining follicles and ease symptoms, not to recreate follicles that have been destroyed.

Seek a dermatology assessment for continuing hair loss, scalp symptoms, or a change in the texture of the scalp. Bring a list of hair products and styling practices, including tight styles, extensions, heat, and chemical treatments. Do not pick crusts or apply someone else’s steroid medicine.

Ask whether the diagnosis and activity are clear, whether a scalp biopsy is needed, and which areas are appropriate for injection. Discuss possible injection-site soreness, skin thinning, and colour change. A treatment plan may combine inflammation control with gentle hair care and regular scalp checks.

Arrange prompt review when loss is rapidly expanding, pain or burning is increasing, or redness, pustules, crusts, or discharge appear. Urgent assessment is sensible for severe swelling, fever, or feeling unwell, since infection or another active process may need different treatment.
