Can steroid injections treat acne keloidalis nuchae?

Acne keloidalis nuchae causes inflamed bumps, often along the back of the neck or scalp margin. An intralesional steroid is placed inside selected raised or active areas. The medicine can reduce local inflammation, tenderness, itch, and thickness. It does not remove every established scar, and it cannot prevent new bumps when ongoing irritation continues.

A clinician may examine whether the bumps are inflamed, firm, draining, or scarred before recommending injections. The diagnosis matters because folliculitis, infection, and other causes of scalp or neck bumps can need different care.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bumps keep returning, enlarge, or leave thick scars. Until then, avoid close shaving over the area, picking, squeezing, and collars or helmet straps that rub the neck. Gentle cleansing can reduce irritation; do not apply strong steroid products to the area unless prescribed.

Fever or feeling generally unwell can signal an infection that needs assessment rather than an injection alone. Arrange review when hair loss, bleeding, or a growing firm area appears.
