Does steroid injection into the skin help with skin lumps?

An intralesional steroid is placed directly into a selected lesion to calm inflammation and reduce excess scar tissue. It may help a raised, firm scar or another steroid-responsive lump become flatter, softer, less itchy, or less tender over time. It is not suitable for every lump. A cyst, abscess, lipoma, mole, or unexplained new growth may need observation, drainage, removal, imaging, or another treatment instead.

Have the lump examined before arranging an injection, especially if it is new, changing, bleeding, or painful. Tell the clinician about previous scar problems, skin infections, medicines, and allergies. After treatment, keep the area clean and follow the advice about pressure, dressing, and activity. The skin at the injection site can become lighter, thinner, or temporarily indented, so treatment should be targeted and monitored.

Arrange prompt assessment for a lump that grows quickly, becomes hot or very painful, drains pus, bleeds without clear injury, or changes colour or shape. Seek urgent care for fever with spreading redness, severe swelling, or swelling near the eye. Do not inject a lump yourself or use leftover steroid medicine on an undiagnosed lesion.

Ask what the lump is, why an intralesional steroid is being considered, how many visits may be needed, and what changes should be reported. Discuss alternatives, possible skin-colour or texture changes, and how the response will be checked.
