Does influenza cause runny nose?

Inflammation in the lining of the nose can lead to watery discharge, stuffiness, sneezing, or post-nasal drip during influenza. Some people notice a runny nose early, while others have stronger whole-body symptoms such as tiredness and aches. Allergies, irritants, and many respiratory infections can also cause this symptom, so it is not a way to diagnose influenza on its own.

Rest and drink enough fluids to remain comfortably hydrated. Gentle nose blowing and saline nasal sprays or drops may help clear discharge. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, which can irritate already inflamed airways. Ask a pharmacist before using a decongestant, particularly if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, are pregnant, or take regular medication.

Seek urgent care if you develop difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or you are hard to wake. Contact a clinician if you become much worse, develop severe facial swelling or pain, or if illness is not following a steady recovery. Earlier advice is sensible for people with significant medical conditions, weakened immunity, or pregnancy.

Explain whether the discharge is clear or thick, whether you have fever or cough, and how quickly symptoms started. Ask which nasal treatments are suitable with your existing medicines and whether you should be assessed for another cause of your symptoms.
