Does inflammatory breast cancer cause breast skin changes?

Most people with Inflammatory Breast Cancer notice breast skin changes. These may include redness, warmth, swelling, thickening, dimpling or a texture resembling an orange peel. The breast can become heavier, tender or different in size, and the nipple may flatten or turn inward. Inflammatory breast cancer can develop without a distinct lump. Similar changes may also result from infection, inflammation, injury or another breast condition, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Arrange a prompt clinical assessment for new, persistent or quickly changing breast skin findings, especially when one breast is affected or the breast feels warm and swollen. Tell the clinician when the change began, whether it followed breastfeeding or injury, and whether antibiotics or other treatment changed it. Seek urgent medical help for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, pus-like discharge or feeling faint or seriously unwell. Arrange prompt review for a new inverted nipple, bloody discharge, a firm area, skin puckering or an area that does not settle. Do not wait for routine screening if a new change is present.
