Short answer

Induction of labour does not cure obstetric cholestasis during pregnancy, but planned birth may be advised after reviewing bile acids, symptoms, and fetal wellbeing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Induction
It may plan birth but does not cure the liver condition during pregnancy.

Why induction may be discussed

Obstetric cholestasis is a liver-related condition of pregnancy that commonly causes itching, often without a rash. Bile acids can rise in the bloodstream and may affect pregnancy management. Induction does not repair the liver or make the condition disappear immediately; symptoms and blood-test changes may continue until after birth.

The timing of birth is individual. Clinicians consider bile-acid results, gestational age, itching, liver tests, fetal movements, monitoring, and other pregnancy factors. Medication may be offered for symptoms or to manage bile acids, while scheduled birth is discussed as part of the safety plan.

What to do next

Tell your maternity team about new or worsening itching, particularly on the palms or soles, and attend repeat blood tests even if an earlier result was normal. Notice your baby's usual movement pattern and follow the unit's instructions about monitoring.

If induction is offered, ask how the cervix will be prepared, how the baby's heart rate will be watched, and what alternatives apply if labour does not begin or progress. Continue prescribed treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise, and arrange postnatal follow-up because symptoms and tests may need review after delivery.

When to seek care

Contact the maternity unit urgently if fetal movements are reduced, you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or feel acutely unwell. Reduced movement should be assessed promptly rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Questions for your doctor

What are my bile-acid and liver-test results? When should they be repeated? How does my result affect the suggested birth timing? What treatment can ease itching? What follow-up will I need after delivery?

Questions people ask

Will induction stop the itching immediately?

Not necessarily. Itching and blood-test changes can persist for a while after birth and need follow-up.

Does everyone with obstetric cholestasis need induction?

No. The timing and route of birth depend on test results, pregnancy stage, symptoms, and fetal assessment.
