Does induction of labour treat fetal growth restriction?

Short answer

Induction of labour does not treat fetal growth restriction itself, but it may be recommended when birth is safer than continuing the pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Induction plans the timing of birth; it does not increase fetal growth.
Monitoring
Growth, blood flow, fluid, movements, and heart rate guide decisions.
Birth options
Induction or caesarean birth may be considered according to findings.

How decisions are made

Fetal growth restriction means a baby is not growing as expected, often because the placenta is not delivering enough oxygen and nutrients. Induction cannot reverse that placental problem or increase growth before birth. Its purpose is to start labour so the baby can be born when monitoring suggests that remaining in the womb carries more concern.

The maternity team considers ultrasound growth measurements, blood flow through the placenta and cord, fluid around the baby, fetal movement, heart-rate monitoring, blood pressure, and the stage of pregnancy. A small baby may be healthy, so size alone does not determine the plan.

What to do next

Attend every scan and monitoring appointment, and report any reduction or change in fetal movement immediately. Ask the team what the measurements show, how often monitoring is needed, and what finding would change the timing or method of birth.

If induction is planned, the clinician may soften the cervix with medication or a device, break the waters, or use an oxytocin drip. Labour progress and the baby's heart rate are monitored. A caesarean birth may be advised if induction is unsuitable or the baby shows signs of distress.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity unit immediately for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or severe upper abdominal pain. These symptoms can require urgent assessment during a pregnancy affected by growth concerns.

Questions for your doctor

What suggests growth restriction rather than a naturally small baby? How are the placenta and cord blood flows? Why is induction recommended now? What happens if the cervix is not ready? When would caesarean birth be safer?

Questions people ask

Will induction make my baby grow?

No. It cannot correct the cause of restricted growth, but birth may allow the baby to receive care outside the womb when needed.

Can a small baby be born after induction?

Yes. The team weighs the baby's condition and pregnancy findings when recommending the timing and route of birth.
