Does immunotherapy treat mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma most often affects the lining around the lungs, although it can arise in other body linings. Immunotherapy uses medicines that help immune cells respond to cancer. It may be used alone or with another immune medicine, and may be discussed when surgery is not suitable or when disease has spread. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and care for fluid or pain may also be part of the plan.

The expected benefit and possible harms depend on the mesothelioma subtype, its location, and your breathing and other health problems. Immune treatment can inflame normal organs, including the lungs, bowel, liver, skin, and thyroid. Monitoring helps the team respond early.

Ask whether the mesothelioma is pleural or affects another lining, and whether the proposed treatment aims to shrink it, slow it, or relieve symptoms. Tell your team about breathlessness, oxygen use, autoimmune illness, transplant history, steroids, and other medicines. Discuss how appointments, blood tests, scans, and symptom checks will be arranged.

Report worsening breathlessness, chest pain, a new cough, severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain, jaundice, a widespread rash, confusion, or unusual weakness promptly. Urgent care is needed for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, or sudden deterioration. Do not assume a new symptom is a normal treatment effect; infection and fluid around the lung can need different care.
