Does immunotherapy treat Merkel cell carcinoma?

Merkel cell carcinoma is a fast-growing skin cancer. Immunotherapy medicines can help immune cells recognise and attack the cancer. A specialist may consider this approach when the cancer has spread, cannot be removed safely, or has come back after earlier treatment. Surgery and radiotherapy may still be important for the skin tumour or nearby lymph nodes. The sequence depends on the tumour location, spread, previous treatment, and your health.

Immune treatment can cause inflammation in healthy tissues. Possible affected areas include the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, kidneys, and hormone-producing glands. Your team will explain monitoring and may arrange blood tests and scans during treatment.

Ask your team whether the cancer is localised or has spread and how that changes the treatment goal. Tell them about autoimmune disease, organ transplantation, long-term steroids, and all medicines. Protect treated skin as advised and report changes rather than waiting for the next appointment. Keep a written list of symptoms, their onset, and any medicines used for them.

Seek prompt advice for new shortness of breath, persistent cough, severe diarrhoea, intense abdominal pain, a spreading rash, yellow eyes or skin, severe headache, confusion, unusual tiredness, or fever. Sudden breathing difficulty, fainting, or severe weakness needs urgent medical attention. These symptoms can have several causes, including infection, so assessment matters.
