Does immunotherapy treat lymphoma?

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise or attack cancer cells. In lymphoma, it may be offered as an antibody-based treatment, a drug that releases immune brakes, or a cellular treatment in selected situations. The plan can differ between Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and between individual subtypes. Immunotherapy may be used alone, combined with chemotherapy or another medicine, or after earlier treatment has not controlled the disease. It is not suitable for every person or every stage.

Your specialist may review biopsy findings, scans, blood tests, earlier medicines, and other health conditions before recommending it. Some immune treatments can cause inflammation in organs such as the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, or thyroid, so symptoms need prompt assessment.

Ask which lymphoma subtype you have and what the treatment aims to achieve. Discuss whether immunotherapy is being considered as an initial treatment, part of a combination, or an option if lymphoma returns. Before treatment, share your medicines, autoimmune conditions, transplant history, allergies, and any previous immune-related problems. Keep a record of new symptoms during treatment and attend scheduled examinations and scans so your team can assess response and safety.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, severe diarrhoea, persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, a widespread rash, marked weakness, confusion, or a high temperature. Do not stop an immune treatment or start steroids without medical advice; early review can help distinguish a treatment reaction from infection or lymphoma-related symptoms.
