Does imiquimod treatment treat genital warts?

Genital warts are growths associated with certain types of human papillomavirus. Imiquimod is applied to external affected skin according to a clinician’s instructions. It does not remove virus from the body directly, and warts can return after treatment. Burning, redness, swelling, soreness, or peeling may occur where the cream is used. It should not be applied inside the vagina, anus, urethra, or other internal areas unless a specialist gives specific instructions.

Get the growths assessed before treatment, especially if they bleed, are firm, pigmented, painful, or unlike previous warts. Use only the prescribed amount on the named external sites, wash your hands after application, and follow advice about washing the area. Avoid sexual contact while the cream is present and discuss barrier protection with a clinician; condoms reduce exposure but do not cover all nearby skin. Do not share the product or use it during pregnancy without medical advice.

Contact the prescriber if irritation prevents normal activity, extends beyond the application area, or is accompanied by marked swelling, pus, or fever. Seek prompt review for bleeding, ulceration, severe pain, a rapidly changing growth, or lesions inside an opening. Arrange reassessment if the warts persist after the planned course or return after clearing.
