Does imiquimod treatment treat basal cell carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that can appear as a shiny bump, scaly patch, or sore that does not heal. Imiquimod is a cream that stimulates an immune response in the treated skin. It is generally considered only for certain superficial tumours; depth, borders, size, and location affect the decision. A lesion near the eyes, nose, lips, ears, or other sensitive areas may need a different approach. The diagnosis and subtype should be established before treatment, sometimes with a biopsy.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for any persistent or changing lesion rather than treating it with leftover cream. If imiquimod is chosen, apply it exactly as directed and attend the planned review. Redness, crusting, soreness, and weeping can reflect the intended local response, but the clinician must judge whether the tumour has cleared. Protect the area from sun and avoid picking the crust. Do not stop early or extend the course without advice, because visible irritation does not by itself show whether the cancer has been treated.

Tell the clinic promptly about severe or spreading inflammation, troublesome pain, pus, fever, or swelling near the eye. Seek urgent review for heavy bleeding or a rapidly enlarging lesion. After the course, return for any remaining lump, ulcer, bleeding point, or new change at the treatment site; follow-up is needed even if the surface appears improved.

Ask what subtype and depth the tumour has, why imiquimod fits its location, how the response will be checked, and which changes should trigger an earlier appointment. Ask whether a biopsy or another treatment is needed before starting.
