Does imiquimod treatment treat actinic keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly area caused by long-term ultraviolet exposure. Imiquimod is applied to the prescribed area rather than taken as a tablet. It stimulates a local immune response, so redness, crusting, swelling, soreness, or peeling can develop while the skin responds. The treatment schedule depends on the site, the number of lesions, and the strength of the product. A clinician may choose another approach when a spot is thick, rapidly changing, or needs tissue testing.

Have the diagnosis confirmed before applying imiquimod, because several skin conditions can look scaly. Follow the prescribed application days and amount, wash your hands afterward, and keep the product away from the eyes, lips, and broken skin unless instructed otherwise. Protect treated skin from sunlight with clothing and shade. Do not add creams or coverings to the area without checking first. A follow-up visit lets the clinician assess healing and decide whether any persistent spot needs another treatment or examination.

Contact the treating clinic if the reaction becomes difficult to tolerate, spreads beyond the treatment area, develops marked swelling, or shows signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, or fever.
