Does hypothyroidism cause numbness and tingling?

When the thyroid does not make enough hormone, body processes can slow. Nerve function may be affected, and swelling or pressure around a nerve can contribute to pins and needles, reduced sensation, burning, or a feeling of heaviness. Symptoms may be noticed in the hands, fingers, feet, or legs and can affect both sides.

Numbness and tingling can also occur with nerve compression, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, some medicines, circulation problems, or other nerve conditions. The sensation alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may consider your symptom pattern, medical history, medicines, examination findings, and thyroid blood tests when assessing it.

Arrange a medical appointment if the sensation is new, keeps returning, or is interfering with walking, handling objects, sleep, or daily activities. Mention whether it is on one side or both, where it starts, how long each episode lasts, and whether weakness, pain, balance changes, or neck or back symptoms occur with it.

If you already have hypothyroidism, take your thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed and discuss the symptoms with your clinician. Do not change the dose or start a vitamin supplement based on numbness alone. Testing and an examination can help distinguish thyroid-related symptoms from another nerve problem.

Seek emergency help for sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, or when it occurs with facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, or a sudden severe headache. These can signal a serious neurological problem.

Get urgent medical assessment if numbness is rapidly spreading, follows a significant injury, or comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain, or difficulty breathing. For gradual or mild symptoms without these warning signs, book a routine appointment for assessment.
