Does hydrotherapy treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis?

Short answer
Hydrotherapy may support movement, strength and comfort in juvenile idiopathic arthritis, but it does not replace medical treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pool offers
Water buoyancy supports a child’s body and reduces stress on painful or stiff joints. Warmth may make gentle movement feel easier, while water resistance provides a controlled way to build strength. A paediatric physiotherapist can turn these properties into play-based activities matched to the child’s age, joints and energy. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is an inflammatory disease, so the rheumatology team still monitors inflammation, growth, function and the need for prescribed medicines.
Making sessions child-friendly
Ask the child’s healthcare team whether pool exercise is suitable during the current disease activity. The supervising therapist may use walking, reaching, kicking, balance games and gentle range-of-motion work. Keep the child warm, hydrated and supervised, and allow breaks when fatigue appears. Do not force a painful joint or continue through a fever or acute illness. Share any change in swelling, morning stiffness, school participation or activity afterwards with the treating team.
When to seek medical care
Contact the child’s clinician if a joint becomes increasingly swollen, hot or difficult to use, or if tiredness persists after sessions. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, serious injury or sudden loss of strength or sensation.
Questions for your doctor
Is pool exercise appropriate during this flare? Which joints or movements need protection? How will we balance activity with fatigue and school demands?
