Does HPV vaccination treat genital warts?

Genital warts are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus. Vaccination is preventive: it prepares the immune system to recognise selected HPV types before exposure. It is not a treatment for warts that are already present and does not replace examination of a new genital lump or lesion.

A person who has had genital warts may still be offered vaccination, depending on age, health history and local clinical guidance. The vaccine does not cover every HPV type, so safer-sex measures and appropriate screening advice remain relevant.

Arrange an appointment to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment options for existing warts. Do not use ordinary pharmacy wart removers on genital skin. Avoid picking or shaving over lesions, and discuss ways to reduce transmission with a clinician. Ask whether vaccination is appropriate for you even if you have had previous HPV exposure.

Seek assessment for a new, changing, bleeding, painful or ulcerated genital growth, or for lesions that return after treatment. Prompt review is also sensible during pregnancy, with a weakened immune system, or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Severe pain, fever or difficulty passing urine requires urgent care.
