Does an HPV test treat HPV infection?

Human papillomavirus can affect the skin and moist linings of areas such as the cervix. A test looks for certain HPV types in a collected sample, usually from the cervix during cervical screening. A positive result means HPV was detected in that sample. It does not by itself show that cancer is present, and it does not tell you exactly when the infection began.

Many HPV infections clear through the body’s immune response. When HPV remains detectable, follow-up may include repeat testing or closer examination of cervical cells, depending on your result and screening history. The test is a decision tool, not a medicine.

Follow the appointment or screening instructions attached to your result, even if you feel well. Ask which HPV type or screening finding was identified, when you should repeat screening, and whether you need an examination of the cervix. Do not skip follow-up because HPV often causes no symptoms.

There is no tablet or procedure that makes an HPV test therapeutic. Care focuses on monitoring or treating changes caused by HPV when they are found. Keep your clinician informed about pregnancy, immune-system conditions, or medicines that may affect your care plan.

Contact a gynaecology or primary-care service if you have a positive result and are unsure what happens next, cannot attend the planned follow-up, or develop symptoms such as bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain. These symptoms can have several causes and do not diagnose HPV-related disease.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, or feeling acutely unwell. A positive HPV test without symptoms still needs the follow-up recommended for your result.
