Does an HPV test treat cervical dysplasia?

An HPV test uses a sample from the cervix to look for high-risk types of human papillomavirus. A positive result does not by itself describe the severity of cell changes. Cervical dysplasia refers to abnormal cells found through screening or further assessment.

Treatment depends on the cell changes, their extent, previous results and your health. Follow-up may include repeat testing, examination of the cervix or a biopsy. Some changes are monitored, while others may need a procedure to remove abnormal tissue.

Keep the appointment recommended after your result, even if you feel well. Ask whether you need repeat HPV testing, cervical cytology, colposcopy or biopsy, and when each step should happen.

Avoid assuming that a negative or positive HPV result replaces the follow-up plan. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, immune-system conditions, smoking and previous abnormal results because these details can affect next steps.

Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual watery or blood-stained discharge, or pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or feeling acutely unwell.
