Does house dust mite allergy cause itchy throat?

House dust mite allergy can inflame the lining of the nose and upper airways. Mucus may then drain towards the throat, producing a tickling or itchy sensation and a need to clear the throat. Breathing through the mouth because of nasal congestion can also dry and irritate the throat. Other allergy symptoms may include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, cough or itchy, watery eyes. An itchy throat can also occur with a cold, dry air, smoke, reflux or another irritant, so it does not by itself establish an allergy diagnosis.

Try reducing dust around the bed and sleeping area, washing bedding as directed, and using a damp cloth for cleaning. Drink fluids regularly and avoid smoke or strongly fragranced products that worsen irritation. Saline nasal spray or rinsing may help clear mucus; follow product directions and use safe water for rinsing. A pharmacist can discuss an antihistamine or nasal treatment, while a doctor can help if symptoms keep returning or interfere with sleep, speaking or eating.

Seek medical advice for a sore or itchy throat that lasts, keeps recurring, or is accompanied by fever, marked pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or breathing symptoms. Get urgent help if the throat or tongue suddenly swells, breathing becomes difficult, you feel faint, or symptoms develop quickly after exposure. Such changes may signal a severe allergic reaction.

Ask whether postnasal drip or another cause could explain the irritation, whether testing is appropriate, and how to use a nasal spray safely. Describe the timing, bedroom or cleaning triggers, associated nasal symptoms, and any new foods or medicines.
