Does house dust mite allergy cause itchy eyes?

Allergen particles from house dust mites can irritate the conjunctiva, the thin surface covering the eye, after contact with the eyes or nearby nasal passages. This may cause itching, watering, redness and a gritty feeling. Symptoms can be strongest in bedrooms, after handling bedding, or while dust is being disturbed. Itchy eyes can also occur with seasonal pollen, pet allergens, irritants or infection. Allergy-related eye symptoms usually affect both eyes and are commonly accompanied by sneezing or nasal symptoms, but a clinician can check the pattern.

Avoid rubbing, which can further irritate the eye surface. Wash hands after cleaning, keep windows closed when outdoor allergens are high, and wash bedding regularly using a fabric-safe hot cycle. Mite-resistant mattress and pillow covers may reduce exposure. A cool clean compress can soothe itching, and preservative-free lubricating drops may help dryness. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about allergy eye drops if symptoms continue. Do not share eye drops, and remove contact lenses if the eyes are red or uncomfortable until advice is obtained.

Seek prompt medical advice for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, marked swelling, thick discharge, or symptoms in one eye that are getting worse. Get emergency help for sudden vision loss, severe swelling with breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue. These features are not typical simple allergy symptoms and need urgent assessment.
