Does hormone therapy treat breast cancer?

The treatment is considered when testing shows that the cancer has hormone receptors. These receptors can receive signals from oestrogen or other hormones that encourage cancer cells to grow. Medicines may block those signals or reduce hormone production. Hormone therapy can be used after surgery, alongside other treatment, or when breast cancer has spread, depending on the cancer's features and the person's health.

It is different from hormone replacement therapy used for menopausal symptoms. The choice depends on receptor results, whether the person has reached menopause, previous treatments, and other medicines. A receptor-negative cancer does not respond to this approach in the same way.

Ask whether the pathology report describes the tumour as hormone-receptor positive and whether hormone therapy is recommended. Discuss the medicine, how it is taken, expected duration, and ways to manage effects such as hot flushes, joint symptoms, mood changes, or changes in bleeding. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without speaking with the oncology team.

Contact the treatment team promptly for new leg swelling or pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, sudden weakness, heavy bleeding, or a serious allergic reaction. Report persistent side effects early so the team can check the cause and consider safe adjustments.
