Does Hodgkin lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Hodgkin lymphoma may cause a painless, firm swelling in lymph nodes, often in the neck, chest, or underarm. Nodes inside the chest may not be felt but can cause cough, chest pressure, or breathlessness. Fever, drenching night sweats, itching, tiredness, or unexplained weight loss may occur, but not everyone has these symptoms.

Swollen nodes commonly arise from infections, including recent throat or dental infections. Inflammation, medicines, and other illnesses can also be involved. The feel, location, duration, and associated symptoms help guide assessment; swelling alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical review for a node that persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or appears without a clear recent infection. Note its location, when you first noticed it, whether it is tender, and any fever, sweats, itching, or weight change. A clinician may examine other areas and decide whether blood tests, imaging, or a tissue sample is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for swollen nodes with difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe chest pain, fainting, or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact a clinician promptly when swelling is persistent or accompanied by repeated fever, drenching night sweats, significant tiredness, or unexplained weight loss. These findings require assessment but do not by themselves establish Hodgkin lymphoma.
