Does hip resurfacing treat hip osteoarthritis?

During hip resurfacing, the surgeon removes a small amount of damaged bone from the top of the thigh bone, places a smooth cap over it, and lines the socket with an implant. The aim is to reduce painful contact while preserving more of the thigh bone than a conventional total hip replacement.

It is not suitable for everyone. Bone quality, hip shape, age, activity goals, medical conditions and the extent of joint damage all affect the discussion. Your assessment should compare resurfacing with other options, including non-surgical care and total hip replacement.
