Short answer

Most people with Hip Osteoarthritis notice groin pain because changes inside the hip joint can refer pain toward the front of the hip and groin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Does hip osteoarthritis cause groin pain?

The symptom may appear during walking, standing up, climbing stairs, or turning the leg. It can also be felt in the thigh, buttock, or knee. Groin pain has several possible causes, so this symptom alone does not establish hip osteoarthritis.

What the pain may mean

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. Osteoarthritis can gradually affect the smooth surfaces that help the joint move. Irritation and reduced movement can produce a deep ache in the groin, particularly when the hip is loaded or rotated.

Stiffness after resting, difficulty putting on socks, and a shorter walking distance can occur alongside the pain. A clinician may compare hip movement with the lower back, muscles, and nearby joints because each can also refer discomfort to the groin.

What you can do

Arrange an assessment if groin pain keeps returning, limits daily activities, or comes with hip stiffness. Until then, pace activities, avoid movements that sharply increase pain, and use gentle movement within a comfortable range rather than prolonged complete rest.

A physiotherapist or doctor can discuss strengthening around the hip, walking adjustments, supportive equipment when appropriate, and pain-relief options that fit your health history. Do not start or change medicines without checking whether they are suitable for you.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical help after a significant fall or injury, especially if you cannot bear weight, the leg looks unusually positioned, or pain is severe. Urgent assessment is also appropriate with fever, a hot or markedly swollen joint, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

For pain without these warning signs, book a routine appointment when it affects sleep, work, walking, or self-care, or when it does not settle with activity changes. Assessment can help distinguish a hip-joint problem from a muscle, back, or abdominal cause.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could my pain be coming from the hip joint, back, or a nearby muscle? Which movements should I temporarily modify? Would physiotherapy help improve hip movement and strength? Do I need imaging, and what would it add to the examination? Which pain-relief choices are safe with my other conditions or medicines?

Questions people ask

Can hip osteoarthritis pain spread beyond the groin?

Yes. Pain from the hip may also be felt in the front of the thigh, buttock, or sometimes the knee.

Does groin pain confirm hip osteoarthritis?

No. Groin pain can have several causes, so an examination is needed to identify the source.

Should I stop walking if my hip hurts?

Usually, pacing and comfortable gentle movement are more useful than complete rest, but sharp or escalating pain is a reason to reduce the activity and seek advice.
