Does hip impingement cause hip pain?

Short answer
Hip Pain is a common presentation of Hip Impingement, often felt when the joint is flexed, rotated or placed under load.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hip impingement can hurt
In hip impingement, the shape or movement of the ball-and-socket joint can reduce clearance in particular positions. Contact or pressure may irritate the labrum, cartilage or joint lining. The pain is often deep in the front of the hip or groin, but it can spread toward the thigh. Sitting low, climbing stairs, squatting, running or turning may bring it on. Similar pain can come from muscles, the lower back or other hip conditions, so symptoms need context.
Practical steps
Keep a note of the activity, position and duration that bring on pain. Reduce the provoking load for a while, avoid forcing painful end-range positions, and use comfortable low-impact movement if tolerated. Assessment can identify restrictions in hip motion, weakness or movement habits that physiotherapy can address. If symptoms continue or affect work, sleep or exercise, a clinician can discuss examination, imaging and options suited to the suspected cause.
When to seek care
Arrange a review when hip pain persists, repeatedly returns or causes a limp, reduced movement or difficulty with routine tasks. Get urgent care for severe pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, fever with a hot swollen joint, or sudden numbness or weakness. Emergency assessment is appropriate if the leg appears deformed or the foot becomes cold or pale.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what examination findings support hip impingement, whether another source of pain should be checked, and whether imaging would change management. Discuss safe exercise, pain-relief choices, activity modification and signs that should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Can hip impingement cause pain outside the hip?
Yes. Pain may be felt in the groin or front of the thigh, and some people notice discomfort around the side of the hip or lower back.
Does hip pain confirm impingement?
No. Hip pain has many possible causes. A clinician uses the history and examination, and sometimes imaging, to narrow them down.
