The hip labrum is a ring of tissue around the socket that helps the joint move smoothly and stay supported. During arthroscopy, a surgeon uses a camera and instruments through small openings to inspect the joint. Depending on the tear's location, tissue quality, and other findings such as impingement, the surgeon may repair the labrum or trim unstable tissue. A scan and physical examination help determine whether the tear matches your symptoms; a finding on imaging does not by itself decide that surgery is needed.
