Through small openings, a surgeon can inspect the joint, reshape bone that causes repeated contact, and address associated cartilage or labral damage. It is not suitable for every cause of hip pain.

Hip impingement occurs when the ball and socket do not move freely through part of the hip’s range. Treatment decisions consider pain, movement restriction, activity goals, joint wear, and response to non-surgical care. Arthroscopy aims to improve clearance and manage damage; it cannot reverse established arthritis. Recovery involves protected movement followed by rehabilitation to restore strength and control.
