Does hidradenitis suppurativa cause painful skin?

Hidradenitis suppurativa causes inflammation around hair follicles, often in the armpits, groin, under the breasts, or between the buttocks. The skin may feel tender, sore, burning, or painful when clothing or movement creates pressure. Pain can come from a deep lump, an area that has opened and drained, or scarred skin that rubs during movement. Painful skin has many possible causes, so this symptom by itself does not establish hidradenitis suppurativa.

Reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing and avoid fragranced products on the affected area. Clean gently and pat dry rather than scrubbing. A warm or cool compress may provide comfort; use whichever feels better and protect the skin from extreme temperatures. Do not squeeze lesions or pick at crusts. Keep a record of painful areas, flare timing, drainage, and activities that increase discomfort so your clinician can plan care.

Arrange an appointment if painful skin keeps returning, limits walking or movement, forms lumps, drains, or leaves scars. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, or feeling unwell, as these findings may indicate infection or another condition needing treatment. Get urgent help for severe swelling or pain that escalates quickly. A clinician can examine active and healed areas, including places that are difficult to see yourself.
