Does hiatus hernia cause indigestion?

A hiatus hernia moves part of the stomach through the diaphragm. Changes around the stomach and lower oesophagus can encourage reflux or make digestion feel uncomfortable. Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, may include burning or discomfort in the upper abdomen, early fullness, bloating, or belching. These symptoms do not by themselves show that a hernia is responsible; ulcers, reflux, food triggers, medicines, and other conditions can cause similar complaints.

Keep a short record of meals, drinks, medicines, timing, and symptoms. Eating more slowly, choosing smaller portions, and staying upright after meals may help. Avoid personal triggers rather than removing broad food groups without advice. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss suitable symptom relief and check whether medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers could be contributing. Persistent symptoms deserve a focused review instead of repeated self-treatment.

Book an appointment if indigestion continues, keeps returning, or is accompanied by swallowing difficulty, repeated vomiting, unintentional weight loss, anaemia symptoms, or a marked change in your usual pattern.
