Does hiatus hernia cause heartburn?

A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves upward through the opening in the diaphragm. This can affect the barrier between the stomach and oesophagus, allowing acidic stomach contents to travel upwards. Heartburn may feel like burning behind the breastbone, often after eating or when lying down. The two conditions can occur together, but having heartburn alone does not establish that a hiatus hernia is present.

Notice when symptoms occur, including their relationship to meals, bending, or bedtime. Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and raising the upper body during sleep may reduce reflux for some people. Foods, drinks, medicines, excess weight, and smoking can also aggravate symptoms. A clinician can review your pattern and recommend an antacid or other treatment when appropriate. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it.

Arrange medical advice if heartburn is persistent, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or needs frequent self-treatment. Seek urgent care for severe or new chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, or food becoming stuck. These warning signs need assessment because chest and digestive symptoms can have several causes.
