Can a herniated disc cause bladder or bowel changes with back pain?

A disc in the lower spine can bulge or rupture and irritate nearby nerves. Those nerves help control feeling around the inner thighs and buttocks, as well as bladder and bowel function. Changes may include difficulty starting urination, reduced awareness that the bladder is full, leakage, loss of bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area. Other explanations are possible, so the symptom pattern and examination matter.

Do not test the symptoms by lifting, stretching forcefully, or waiting for routine improvement. Contact an urgent medical service and describe the back pain, the exact bladder or bowel change, when it began, and any leg weakness or saddle numbness. Keep a note of your last normal urination and bowel movement if you can do so without delaying care.

Go to an emergency department immediately for new trouble passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, or worsening weakness in either leg. These signs can indicate severe compression of the lower spinal nerves and should be assessed without delay.

Ask which nerve findings need checking, whether urgent imaging is needed, and which movements or medicines should be avoided while you are being assessed. Also ask how to recognise worsening weakness or return of bladder sensation.
