Why consciousness can be lost

Severe overheating can impair the brain and circulation. A person may become dizzy, confused, unusually drowsy or unconscious; hot skin and abnormal behaviour may also occur. Fainting is an emergency warning sign in a hot environment. It can have other causes as well, so a medical team must assess the person rather than relying on the episode alone.

Act immediately

Call emergency services. Move the person to a cooler place if this can be done safely, remove excess clothing and cool them with cool wet cloths, fanning or other available cooling methods. Place an unconscious but breathing person on their side and watch their breathing. Do not give food, drink or medicines to someone who is unconscious, confused or unable to swallow.

Emergency warning

Fainting with suspected heat stroke always needs urgent medical help, even if the person wakes up. Treat confusion, seizure, breathing difficulty, persistent unconsciousness, very hot skin or worsening condition as an emergency. Stay with the person until help arrives and follow the emergency operator's instructions.
