Does heat exhaustion cause heat intolerance?

Short answer
Heat Intolerance is a common presentation of Heat Exhaustion while the body is struggling to control its temperature.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why it happens
- Cooling demands exceed the body's ability to respond
- Recovery aid
- Cool surroundings and gradual rehydration
What the change can feel like
Heat exhaustion can follow prolonged heat, exertion or sweating. During it, the body may cool itself less effectively, making warm surroundings feel unusually difficult. You may feel weak, dizzy, sweaty, thirsty or nauseated, and symptoms may return if you go back into heat too soon. Heat intolerance can also have other explanations, including medicines or medical conditions, so it is not specific to heat exhaustion.
How to recover
Rest in a cool environment and avoid strenuous activity until symptoms have settled. Wear loose, light clothing, use air movement or cool damp cloths, and drink small amounts regularly if you are alert and able to swallow. Plan breaks in shade or air conditioning when you must be outdoors. Never ignore renewed dizziness, weakness or nausea while exercising in heat.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, seizures, inability to drink, repeated vomiting or very hot skin. Medical assessment is also appropriate when heat intolerance persists, repeatedly interferes with daily activities, or occurs without an obvious heat exposure. Do not leave a person with worsening heat symptoms alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how long you should limit heat exposure, whether a medicine or health condition affects temperature control, and how to plan safe activity in warm weather.
