Does a hearing test treat earwax buildup?

Earwax can block the ear canal and temporarily reduce hearing or cause fullness, ringing, or discomfort. A hearing test checks how well sounds are detected and may help describe hearing loss. It cannot dissolve, remove, or safely push out wax. Wax can also interfere with equipment or make a result difficult to interpret, so the ear may be looked at before testing.

If wax is suspected, a clinician or pharmacist can advise on suitable softening treatment or arrange removal. Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the ear, because these can push wax deeper or injure the canal.

Tell the hearing service about blockage, pain, discharge, previous ear surgery, or a sudden change in hearing. Arrange an ear examination when wax is affecting hearing or preventing a useful test. After appropriate wax care, repeat hearing assessment if hearing remains reduced. Use ear drops only when advised that they are suitable; some people should avoid them when they have a perforated eardrum or ear tubes.

Seek prompt medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, dizziness, discharge, bleeding, fever, or an object in the ear. Arrange assessment for hearing changes that persist after wax has been removed, because another ear problem may need attention.

Ask whether wax is blocking the canal, whether removal is safe for you, and when a hearing test will give a useful result. Mention previous ear operations, perforations, tubes, pain, discharge, and whether the hearing change was sudden.
