Does head and neck cancer cause neck lump?

Head and neck cancer can involve tissues in the mouth, throat, voice box, nose, or nearby lymph nodes. A lump may therefore appear in the side of the neck, under the jaw, or near the collarbone. Its size, firmness, movement, duration, and associated symptoms help guide assessment, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Infections, cysts, salivary-gland problems, and other non-cancerous conditions can also produce a lump.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a neck lump that persists, enlarges, returns, or has no clear explanation. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, ears, skin, and neck and may arrange imaging or a small tissue sample. Mention smoking or alcohol exposure, recent infections, voice change, swallowing difficulty, ear pain, mouth sores, and weight change. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press the lump.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, coughing blood, severe bleeding, or sudden facial or neck swelling. Contact a clinician promptly if the lump is hard or fixed, continues to grow, or occurs with persistent hoarseness, one-sided ear pain, unexplained mouth ulceration, or night sweats. These features do not establish cancer, but they should not be ignored.
