Can head and neck cancer cause difficulty swallowing?

Head and neck cancers can affect structures involved in chewing, moving food, or protecting the airway. A person may feel that food sticks, need extra effort to swallow, cough while eating, or notice a change in voice. The problem may involve solids, liquids, or both. Persistent symptoms can also arise from reflux, infection, dental problems, neurological conditions, or a blockage that is not cancer.

A symptom does not establish a diagnosis. The location, duration, progression, tobacco or alcohol exposure, and associated signs such as a neck lump or unexplained weight loss guide assessment.

Book an appointment if swallowing difficulty lasts, returns, or is getting worse. Keep notes about which foods cause trouble and whether coughing, pain, voice change, or weight change occurs. Choose softer foods and take small bites while arranging care, but do not rely on dietary changes to explain away a persistent symptom. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, neck, and nerves and arrange further tests if needed.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, food is stuck, breathing is difficult, or swallowing suddenly becomes much worse. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for coughing or choking with most meals, dehydration, bleeding, a growing neck lump, or a persistent hoarse voice.

Ask what part of swallowing seems affected, which causes need consideration, and whether you need an ear, nose and throat referral or a swallowing assessment. Share your smoking or alcohol history, previous cancers, medicines, and the exact time course.
