Does hand therapy treat Dupuytren's contracture?

Dupuytren's contracture causes thickened bands or nodules in the palm that can gradually pull one or more fingers towards the palm. A hand therapist can assess finger motion, grip, swelling and how the condition affects tasks such as writing, dressing or holding objects. Treatment may include gentle exercises, activity adjustments, splint advice and techniques to protect useful movement. These measures support function; they do not dissolve the cord or guarantee that a bent finger will straighten.

Arrange an assessment with a clinician if finger bending is limiting everyday activities. A therapist may create a home programme that matches your current range and comfort. Practise only the recommended movements, avoid forcing a contracted finger, and use any splint exactly as advised. If the contracture is progressing or hand use is becoming difficult, ask whether a specialist assessment for procedures or surgery is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical advice for a rapidly changing lump, marked redness or warmth, severe new pain, or a sudden loss of finger movement after an injury. Make a routine appointment when a finger cannot rest flat, the palm becomes difficult to clean, or work and self-care are affected.
