Do haemorrhoids cause blood in stool?

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels around the anus or lower rectum. Most people with Haemorrhoids notice blood in stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl, often as bright-red blood after passing stool. Straining, hard stools and prolonged sitting on the toilet can irritate the area. The appearance of blood alone cannot identify its cause, so ongoing, recurrent or unexplained bleeding deserves a clinical review.

Keep stools soft by drinking suitable fluids, eating fibre-rich foods and responding to the urge to open your bowels. Avoid straining and lengthy toilet sitting. Gentle cleaning and warm water may ease irritation; rubbing can worsen symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on short-term treatments if discomfort, itching or swelling continues. Mention the colour, amount and timing of bleeding at your appointment.

Seek urgent help for heavy or continuous bleeding, black or tar-like stool, fainting, severe dizziness, marked weakness or intense abdominal pain. Arrange prompt medical review if blood is mixed through the stool, bowel habits change, pain persists, or bleeding keeps returning. Do not assume that every episode of rectal bleeding is caused by haemorrhoids.
