Does an H. pylori breath test treat a peptic ulcer?

A peptic ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. H. pylori infection can be one contributor, while anti-inflammatory pain medicines and other factors can also be involved. The breath test looks for H. pylori activity after you swallow a prepared substance. It cannot seal the ulcer, stop bleeding or relieve pain by itself.

Discuss preparation with your clinician because some antibiotics and acid-suppressing medicines can interfere with the result. Never pause prescribed medicines without instructions. If H. pylori is detected, treatment is directed at clearing the infection; ulcer care may also require medicine that reduces stomach acid and allows the lining to heal. Ask whether follow-up testing or further examination is needed for your symptoms.
